Nurturing the soil with passion

Our wines embody the essence of our terroir and its native Sangiovese. Learn more about our process of wine-making.

Our work begins in the vineyard. Thanks to the relatively small human level scale, our vineyards are cared for manually following Organic and or biodynamic practices. We follow the lunar calendar in the vineyard and in the cellar, and ferment with indigenous yeasts. As a result, our wines embody the essence of our terroir and its native Sangiovese.

At Poggio La Noce, right from the beginning we were living on the property, growing our vegetables there, drinking the water from our well, so right from the start of this incredible adventure, we knew that we wanted to farm with the utmost respect for the surrounding nature and the valley. We adopted organic practices immediately and were officially certified in 2006.

This means no pesticides or herbicides are ever used, instead, we follow many of the organic practices such as the use of green manure, planting leguminous plants in the Fall which by Springtime we cut back and mulch into the ground, thus bringing nitrogen back. Many flowers too are part of this, such as the lovely Blue Tansey (Phacelia), which attracts pollinators who in turn help keep other insects at bay. Natural Pheromones are used to induce sexual confusion amongst the grapevine fly (Tignoletta) thus preventing them from laying their eggs within the grape berries and damaging part of the fruit production. Sprays of algae and orange flower essence are used to boost the vines’ natural immune system, helping with disease prevention. To help prevent the grape berries from becoming sunburnt during heat spells in the summer months, we have adopted a system of shading nets which has proved to be quite reliable. And of course, we follow the lunar calendar for all serious operations in the vineyard or the winery.

And in the end, these practices and philosophy of nurturing the nature around us, go beyond the caring for the plants and encompass our entire little ecosystem on this hillside and valley, and reach to our relationships with those we work with. Our mission to produce genuine beautiful wines on a human scale has become an entire way of life.
